Virar: Fake currency notes with a face value of ₹1 crore were seized by the Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar (MBVV) Crime Branch Unit-2 (Vasai) during an operation near the Shirsat Phata Bridge (Virar) on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad National Highway (NH48) in Virar on Monday evening.

According to preliminary information, the police intercepted a car bearing registration number MH 48 BT 8686, which was travelling from Gujarat towards Mumbai. During a search of the vehicle, officers allegedly found a bag containing twenty thousand counterfeit ₹500 notes, which were banned.

The total face value of the seized counterfeit currency is estimated at ₹1 crore.

Police suspect that the counterfeit notes were allegedly being transported for sale in the Mumbai region. Preliminary information suggests that the accused was planning to sell the fake currency for approximately ₹30 lakh.

A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the seizure, and the police have launched a detailed investigation into the case.

Investigators are now attempting to establish the source of the counterfeit currency, identify other individuals involved in its transportation and distribution, and trace the alleged mastermind behind the racket.

The police are also investigating whether the seized notes were part of a larger counterfeit currency network operating across Gujarat, Mumbai and neighbouring areas.
