El Niño – CIDCO implements 15% water cut; Weekly 24hr shutdown announced!

Goa: Residents across Navi Mumbai’s CIDCO-developed nodes will have to brace for reduced water supply as the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has implemented a 15% water cut across all nodes under its jurisdiction from November 2, 2026. As part of the conservation measures, water supply will remain suspended for 24 hours once every week in each node until further notice.

In a press note, CIDCO stated that the decision follows concerns over inadequate rainfall during the previous year due to the impact of El Niño, which resulted in water scarcity even during the monsoon period. Anticipating the possibility of similar conditions, the Maharashtra government issued a Government Resolution on October 5, 2026, directing authorities to manage available water resources judiciously and prioritise drinking water security until August 31, 2027.

CIDCO said it receives water from multiple sources and has introduced the reduction to bridge the gap between demand and availability while ensuring economical utilisation of existing reserves.

According to the proposed node-wise schedule, a 24-hour shutdown will be observed in Kharghar on Monday; Ulwe on Tuesday; and Taloja on Friday. In Ulwe, sectors 8, 9, 10B, 15C, 16, 17 and 18, including Shelghar, Bamandongari, Nhava, Shivajinagar and Nhava Khadi, will receive water on alternate days. A similar alternate-day supply arrangement will apply to specified sectors and localities in Dronagiri.

In the remaining nodes, shutdowns will be implemented in New Panvel (East) on Monday, New Panvel (West) on Tuesday, Kalamboli on Wednesday, Karanjade on Thursday, and Kalundre and Kamothe on Friday.

CIDCO has appealed to residents to use drinking water judiciously and avoid wastage. Citizens have been advised against using potable water for washing vehicles and swimming pools, with violations attracting penal action. Housing societies have also been asked to prevent overhead tanks from overflowing, repair leaking taps and pipelines, and avoid unnecessary disposal of stored water.

The corporation has urged residents to cooperate with the administration, stressing that responsible consumption and collective conservation efforts will be essential to manage the possibility of water scarcity in the coming months.
