Vaishno Devi Temple is a famous Hindu pilgrimage site located in the beautiful state of Jammu and Kashmir. History of Vaishno Devi Temple
The history of Vaishno Devi Temple dates back to the era of the Mahabharata when Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, prayed to Maa Durga for victory in the war. The goddess appeared to him and blessed him with the boon he sought. The place where Arjuna worshipped the goddess became known as Vaishno Devi Temple.
Legend has it that Maa Vaishno Devi was born as the daughter of a Himalayan king named Ratnakar. She was named Trikuta, and from a young age, she had a deep devotion to Lord Vishnu. When she grew up, she wished to marry Lord Vishnu, but he declined her proposal and asked her to do penance instead.
Trikuta went to the forests and meditated for years, seeking the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before her and asked her to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. Trikuta then went to the mountains and meditated for nine months, seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva. Finally, Lord Shiva appeared before her and granted her the boon of being worshipped as a goddess.
The shrine of Vaishno Devi Temple was built by a Pandit named Sridhar in the 11th century, and since then, it has been a place of worship for Hindus from all over the world.
The Spiritual Journey to Vaishno Devi Temple
The journey to Vaishno Devi Temple is considered to be a spiritual and divine experience. Devotees have to trek for around 14 km from the base camp at Katra to reach the shrine. The trek is a challenging one, but it is considered to be a test of faith and devotion.
The trek is divided into three stages: Banganga, Adkuwari, and Sanjichhat. At each stage, there are rest houses and refreshment stalls for devotees. The final stage of the trek is the climb to the main shrine, where devotees have to climb 660 steps to reach the temple.
Devotees can also take the helicopter service to reach the temple, which is available from Katra. The helicopter ride is a short one, but it offers a breathtaking view of the mountains and the surrounding scenery.
The Darshan at Vaishno Devi Temple
Once devotees reach the temple, they have to pass through a narrow cave-like structure to reach the inner sanctum. The cave is adorned with beautiful carvings and sculptures, and it is believed that the goddess resides in the cave.
Devotees offer prayers and perform various rituals at the shrine, seeking the blessings of the goddess. It is believed that whoever visits the temple with true devotion, their wishes are granted, and they are blessed with prosperity, happiness, and good health.
