Meerut, 21 February (HS): Bharatiya Kisan union (Tikait) workers started a dharna at the Collectorate on Wednesday regarding their demands. The barricades installed to stop the farmers were removed by the tractors. The police also had an altercation with the farmers regarding this.
National President of BKU Naresh Tikait had on Wednesday announced a protest at the district headquarters in western Uttar Pradesh.
On Wednesday, under the leadership of BKU Meerut District President Anurag Chaudhary, workers created a ruckus at the Collectorate. The police had barricaded the Commissionerate intersection to stop the farmers, which was removed by the farmers with tractors, due to which there was an altercation between the farmers and the police.
Farmers brought hookah and cots with them. There was talk of Naresh Tikait’s participation in this dharna, but he joined the dharna in Muzaffarnagar. For this reason, BKU spokesperson Rakesh Tikait reached Meerut to join the protest. Farmers entered the Collectorate along with tractors and started protesting. Farmers raised demands for payment of sugarcane dues, withdrawal of cases registered against farmers etc. Farmers have announced an indefinite strike if their demands are not met.
