Police stops central BJP team from visiting Sandeshkhali

Sandeshkhali, 17 February (HS): The central team of BJP leaders, which included two union ministers, was stopped from visiting Sandeshkhali village of West Bengal on Friday. Faced with the police obstruction, the members of the team sat on road at Naskarpara in Rampur and protested.

According to the police, Section 144 CrPC has been imposed in several places of the area. If the group enters the village, people will gather in the village. Hence, the law and order situation may deteriorate.

The central BJP team members asked the police to let two of them go to Sandeshkhali. But the police refused to allow them. Therefore, the bickering continued between the two sides for some time

BJP MLA Agnimitra Pal said, ?Trinamool ministers can go. But the ministers of the Center can not go! This is Bengal. We are being restrained by force.?

Union Minister Annapurna Devi said, ”I see the role of the police, it would have been better if such role had been shown in arresting Sheikh Shahjahan as well.”

BJP MP Dilip Ghosh said, ”Such a sad incident happened in Mamata’s state, she is trying to suppress it. If nothing has happened now, why is the central team not allowed to visit the area??

The central BJP team, later in the day, is supposed to meet Governor C V Ananda Bose in Kolkata.

Notably, A large number of women in Sandeshkhali accused Trinamool Congress strongman Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters of ”land-grab and sexually assaulting” them under coercion. Shajahan has been absconding after a mob, allegedly affiliated to him, attacked Enforcement Directorate officials who had gone to search his premises in connection with a ration scam on January 5.
