On Wednesday in Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated and set the groundwork for several crucial connectivity endeavors, aggregating to a total of Rs 15,400 crores. These projects, aimed at enhancing urban mobility, prominently feature expansions in the Metro Rail and the introduction of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
A highlight of his visit was a ride on the Esplanade – Howrah Maidan metro line, marking India’s premiere venture into underwater metro systems. During this ride, the Prime Minister engaged with the laborers (shramiks) who contributed to the project and school children, adding a personal touch to the occasion.
Through a sequence of updates on X, Prime Minister Modi shared his reflections on the journey, emphasizing the historical significance of traversing beneath the Hooghly river in this groundbreaking metro tunnel. He celebrated the day as a monumental achievement for Kolkata, noting the metro expansion will significantly bolster city connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion. Modi lauded the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro segment as a landmark achievement, being the country’s first underwater metro tunnel beneath a major river, heralding a new era in public transportation for India.
