History: The Shaniwarwada was built in 1732 by Bajirao I, the second Peshwa of the Maratha Empire. The Shaniwarwada served as the seat of the Peshwas until 1818 when the British East India Company took control of the Shanivarwada. It was originally intended to be a seven-storeyed structure. Still, after the death of Bajirao I, only the base floor was completed.
Built as a residence for the Peshwas, it also served as a center for political and cultural activities. As a result, the fort witnessed several historical events, including the signing of the Treaty of Purandar between the Marathas and the British in 1776.
In 1828, a massive fire broke out in the fort, destroying much of the structure. The fort was later rebuilt, but the new structure was much smaller than the original.
