Nine FIRs filed in Nayanagar, Kashimira, Navghar and Bhayandar police stations.

Mumbai, November 06, 2023: Adani Electricity has taken a strict action against power theft and pilferage as it is not only a criminal offence but also a social offence. In the last six months since April 2023 to October 2023 it has booked forty-three power theft cases and registered nine FIRs’ at Nayanagar, Kashimira, Navghar and Bhayandar police station. During the period it has assessed 1.70 lakhs theft units and the total amount assessed is Rs. 29.60 lakhs.
Out of Rs. 29.60 lakhs total amount assessed; Adani Electricity booked three big amount power theft case. On October 27, 2023, it booked a power theft case of Rs. 3,82,691 against Dwarkanath Yashwant Raut for 19250 units and the FIR was filed at Bhayander Police Station, the second case against Ganesh Gopal Shetty and Devendra Patil for Rs. 2,86049 for units assessed 14127 at Bhayander Police Station and third case against Prakash Mhatre for Rs. 2,54,772 at Bhayander Police station for units assessed 10796.
Speaking on the last six months power theft cases in Mira-Bhayender power distribution area, Adani Electricity spokesperson said, “Power theft puts tariff burden on honest and paying consumers and this situation is not acceptable to us. By cracking down on these unlawful activities, the company protects the interest of its honest consumers. There are certain pockets of the city where the menace of power theft is rampant. We shall step up our efforts further to bring down AT&C losses in the area”.
Stealing electricity is a non-bailable offence. Under section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003, the offender can be punished with a fine, a jail term of up to three years, or both, once proven guilty.
Adani Electricity’s vigilance and enforcement teams have been diligently conducting regular mass raids with assistance from police authorities to book offenders and impound equipment like unauthorized wires used in pilfering electricity from its network.
Burden on infrastructure
The power demand in certain slum clusters is already high, and new network development is not feasible due to acute space constraints. Power theft overloads the network. This increases the cost of servicing as cables and transformers are more prone to failures, adding to a surge in repair and maintenance costs.
