Day 1: Goa Assembly; Monsoon Session!

Adjourned Twice in the first 30 minutes!

The Eight monsoon session of the Goa State rocked from the minute it commenced, forcing the speaker to adjourn it twice in the first 30 minutes. The first adjournment was for 15 minutes, when the session was barely in its 10th minute; while the second adjournment occurred immediately when the session commenced. This time the adjournment was for 20 minutes.

It all started when the Goa CM Dr. Pramod Sawant spoke about “The Cuncolim Chieftains Memorial”. LoP Yuri Alemao strongly spoke about, first renovating it! While this was escalating, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, spoke about Two issues; questions of the house being answered via news papers and Extortion by BJP MLA’s!

As per rule, the questions are first sent to the house and then discussed and answered in the assembly. But the question on National Education Policy (NEP) which was to be discussed in the house, was answered via a press conference, claimed Sardesai. “Sanctity of the House has been Breached”, screamed Sardesai! CM Sawant tried to downplay this by mentioning that it may have been answered with all questions.

Second important issue raised by Sardesai was when he alleged that BJP MLA’s were involved in extortion activities targeting the business fraternity by arm twisting them. He was waiving news paper articles while he was mentioning this. CM Sawant furiously said that “News Papers is not Proof”! The house was further adjourned for 20 minutes, post which the session proceeded in a calm manner.

Swage issues, Internet Cables dangerously dangling from buildings and trees, shortage of Teachers and Exploitation of teachers on contract basis, Repair works for jetty’s, frequent power cuts, leakage of gas from scrapyard, measures taken to stop the Dengue menace, dilapidated school buildings were the issues discussed during the first half of the first day of the monsoon session of Goa Assembly.
