BJP MLA Slams Muslim Group for Opposing Burqa-Clad Women's College Walk

Lucknow, 28 Nov (HS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chastised the Jamiat-e-Ulema on Tuesday for objecting to a fashion exhibition conducted by Muslim women at a college in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Sidharth Nath Singh, a party MLA, stated that the Jamiat-e-Ulema should demonstrate whether it is mentioned in the Quran that burqa-clad women cannot walk the ramp in a fashion show. He also encouraged the Muslim group not to make a fuss over it. “If it’s written in the Quran, they should go to the college authorities and show it to them. They should not object if it is not written in the Quran, he said. He claims that ramp walks and fashion shows help diverse forms of clothing gain acceptance in society.

“In today’s society, it (various types of attire) gains acceptance through ramp walk. If they have something from the Quran, they should bring it to college and display it to the students. The college administration will then make a decision,” Singh added.

His comment came after Maulana Mukarram Qasmi, the district convener of Jamiat-e-Ulema, expressed his displeasure of the event on Monday, adding that the burqa is not a fashion item. He claimed that such an act targeted a certain faith, perhaps harming Muslim sensibilities.
