Clash between police, DA protesters in West Bengal

Kolkata, 22 December (HS): Clashes broke out between police and DA protesters near West Bengal state secretariat Nabanna at daybreak on Friday.

Calcutta High Court on Thursday allowed the protesters to sit at Navanna bus stand. After that the protesters tried to stage a dharna at Nabanna bus stand at night but the police allegedly stopped the protesters and they retreated at night.

But the agitators reached reached Nabanna bus stand to stage their dharana on Friday morning. The protesters were initially stopped by the police with barricades. The protestors complained that inspite of the high court’s permission, they were not allowed to protest at Navanna bus stand.

However, the protesters sat on the road. When the police asked the them to leave the road, the altercation started.

Bhaskar Ghosh, one of the protesters, said, ”We have come to sit here following the court’s order. The court has ordered that we can sit in the 2,000 square feet space. We will not leave the road until we are given that space.”

Meanwhile the argument continued. Later the police removed the barricade. Arrangements were made for them to sit at the place designated for the police near the Navanna Assembly Hall. For now the protestors are sitting their.
