Doctors' strike cripples OPD services at UP Cancer Institute

Lucknow, 11 Dec (HS): OPD services in the Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Cancer Institute located at Chak Ganjariya in the capital Lucknow have come to a standstill due to doctors going on strike over pay discrepancy.

Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Cancer Institute Faculty Welfare Association declared to go on strike on December 11. After this, the Uttar Pradesh government issued a government order on December 10 and clarified the situation. Despite this, the doctors of the Cancer Institute went on strike on December 11.

Doctors of the Cancer Institute are protesting in Janeshwar Mishra Park with other demands including pay scale at par with SGPGI. Actually, the doctors posted at Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Cancer Institute have been appealing to the government for a long time to give them the seventh pay scale at par with SGPGI, but the government has allegedly ignored their demands. The doctors posted here are currently getting the benefit of sixth pay scale, just like SGPGI. Doctors want that in future also they should get the same pay scale as SGPGI, but the intention of the government is something else. The government has issued a new order regarding pay scales.

The government order has been issued by Deputy Secretary SP Singh on Sunday. It has been said that the doctors and employees posted in the institute will continue to receive salary and allowances as before.

President of Cancer Institute Faculty Association, Prof. Sharad Singh said that the government is implementing dual policy in one institution. The government has ordered to give the benefit of the seventh pay scale to the new doctors, while the case of the old doctors is in the court. Therefore, no government order should be issued until the court’s decision comes. Prof. Sharad Singh said that if “our demands are not accepted then the doctors of the institute will resign en masse”.

Director of SGPGI Dr. RK Dhiman told reporters that the pay scale is decided according to the bylaws of the Cancer Institute. ?The 26th bylaws talks about the same pay scale as the state government. Whereas in the 29th bylaws, the same pay scale as that of SGPGI has been mentioned,? he added. Dr. Dhiman said that the currently posted doctors will continue to get the same pay scale till the order of the court. Further work will be done according to the decision of the court.

The protesting doctors say that Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute is a super specialty hospital. Here, high quality treatment is given to cancer patients. When this institute was formed, it was said that all the arrangements and pay scale would be provided as per SGPGI. At present the posted doctors are getting the same sixth pay scale as SGPGI. The doctor said that due to the chaos, more than a dozen doctors have already left the institute.
