Chandrakona, December 10 (HS): Due to the recent rains across the state due to low pressure, crops of many bighas have been ruined one after the other. Newly planted potatoes have rotted in the ground. Paddy crops have been damaged. In the last two days, news of suicide of two farmers has come to light in West Bengal. This time a potato farmer from Chandrakona has committed suicide.
According to the family members of the deceased, he committed suicide due to depression. The farmer who died was a resident of Chandrakona’s Lahirganj area. His name was Bapi Ghosh.
According to family sources, Bapi had taken huge loan and cultivated about four bighas of Pukhraj and other potatoes. But, untimely rains ruined everything. Family members said that Bapi was suffering from mental depression for some days.
Late on Friday night he consumed poison at home. The family members took him to Ghatal Super Specialty Hospital. But, due to deteriorating physical condition, he was sent to Medinipur Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning. He died late on Saturday night.
After the death of Bapi Ghosh, there is mourning in area. Chandrakona MLA Arup Dhara visited the family of the deceased in the morning on Sunday. He talked to family members and consoled them.
