New Delhi, December 8 (HS): The Ethics Committee report on Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in the cash-for-questions case was presented in the Lok Sabha on Friday amid uproar by the opposition. Following the demand of the opposition, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla fixed half an hour for discussion on this report, which the opposition called inadequate. Congress has asked for three to four days of time to study the report.
The Congress leader in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, said that the Ethics Committee report is very long. In such a situation, members should be given more time to read it. He requested the Lok Sabha Speaker not to take any decision on this issue today. Congress’s Manish Tiwari also said during the discussion that allegations have been made against Mahua, but she was not given a chance to present her side. This is not fair. No ethics committee can recommend any punishment; it only has the right to present a report.
It is noteworthy that BJP member Nishikant Dubey had written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla accusing Mahua Moitra of asking questions after taking money. He had demanded an investigation by the inquiry committee on these allegations.
On Dubey’s allegation, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha had sent the matter to the Ethics Committee of the Parliament. Dubey alleged that Mahua Moitra had taken bribes and gifts in return for asking questions from businessman Darshan Hiranandani. Hiranandani has also accepted these allegations.
The Ethics Committee report was listed to be tabled in the House on Monday, but the report could not be tabled.
