P C George, seven-time lawmaker, joins BJP

Thiruvananthapuram, 31 January (H.S): In a major political move, P C George, a veteran Kerala Congress leader who is a seven-time legislator of the Kerala Legislative Assembly joined the BJP on Wednesday.

In a function held at the national headquarters of the BJP, 70-year-old George also declared that the outfit he leads ?JANAPAKSHAM? is also merging with the BJP taking into account the views expressed by the cadres.

?Cadres of Janapaksham are of the view that we should stand with Prime Minister Narendra Modi because of the yeomen service being rendered by him and the BJP for the progress of the nation,? George told media persons at the BJP headquarters. union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, BJP?s national secretary Anil Antony, Prakash Javadekar and others were also present during the function.

George, who was the chief whip of the Oommen Chandi Government, is a prominent Christian leader in Kerala and his joining the BJP could lead to an exodus of community members to the BJP.

A farmer and lawyer by profession, George is a highly respected politician and is the one and only activist who has been elected to the legislature as an independent candidate against the nominees of the CPI(M) and the Congress.

Since he is a farming leader, many farmers irrespective of their caste or community are likely to follow suit and join the BJP. Interestingly, many Hindu outfits have already gone on record demanding that George be fielded as a candidate from one of the constituencies in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

George started his political career as a grassroots-level worker of the Kerala Congress (a political outfit representing the interests of the Church) and soon reached the party?s high-power decision-making body. He left the party in protest against Kerala Congress chairman K M Mani?s decision to coronate Jose K Mani, his son as heir apparent. George?s prophecy that Jose K Mani was a non-entity in politics when he was defeated by the UDF candidate in the 2021 assembly polls from Pala, a party stronghold.

He was also one of the top Christian community leaders who came out in the open lambasting Love Jihad and Narcotics Jihad perpetrated by the Islamic terrorists for wooing Hindu and Christian girls. This earned him the wrath of the Muslim community which voted unitedly against him leading to his first ever defeat.
