Mumbai, 28 Jan (HS): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar stated on Sunday that discussions, which are the foundation of democracy, have devolved into quarrels, and that presiding authorities of legislative bodies should use their position to maintain decorum.
Addressing the valedictory session of the 84th All India Presiding Officers’ Conference, he described interruptions in legislative bodies as a terrible reality. “It is no secret that disturbances and disruptions are organized, and signs and slogans are printed at the request of those involved. Political weapons are counterproductive and have no place in our system,” he stated. The loss of public trust in representative entities and representatives is “cancerous” to society, he warned. To maintain decorum, the presiding officers should take stock and use their power. He stated that they must undergo correctional therapy in order to prevent deterioration.
The vice president further stated that presiding officers should facilitate the development and nurturing of first-time parliamentarians. He stated that presiding authorities are the defenders of democratic cornerstones. ?Be open to others’ points of view. Debates are the foundation of democracy. They have been reduced to quarrels, which is a painful scenario,” Dhankhar stated. He also stated that all legislation and actions enacted to date will be available on Parliament’s website for public viewing.
Indiscipline and inappropriate behaviour are on the rise, and disruptions are celebrated, he lamented. “This is disturbing and calls for an introspection to find a way out,” Dhankhar went on to say. He emphasized the importance of presiding officials from both chambers of a legislature working together.
