Delhi, 22 February (H.S): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to inaugurate two new Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Surat district today. These two reactors, with a combined capacity of 1,400 megawatts, were built by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) at a cost of Rs 22,500 crore.
These are the country’s largest indigenous PHWRs and their addition will significantly boost India’s nuclear power generation. Along with dedicating these new units, PM Modi will also lay the groundwork for various other projects during his visit to Gujarat. This reflects the government’s commitment towards promoting clean and sustainable energy sources to meet the country’s growing demand for electricity.
The inauguration of these reactors is a significant milestone in India’s nuclear power program and reaffirms the country’s position as a leader in nuclear technology. This event also highlights the strong partnership between India and Russia, as these reactors were built with technical assistance from Russian experts.
