Congress hails SC order on electoral bonds

Delhi, 15 February (HS): The Congress Party has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to abolish the Electoral Bond Scheme. The party has expressed hope that the Bharatiya Janata Party will now listen to the Supreme Court and avoid damaging the transparent, democratic and equal opportunity conditions in future.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge says that the party believes from day one that the plan lacks clarity and is undemocratic. The Supreme Court has also declared this plan to convert black money unconstitutional.

The BJP got the scheme passed by bulldozing everyone including RBI, Election Commission, Parliament and the opposition. It is no surprise that 95 percent of the money received from the scheme went only to the BJP. The Congress party had clearly said in its 2019 manifesto that the scheme would be abolished if it comes to power.

Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh has said that the decision to declare electoral bonds unconstitutional is welcome. This will strengthen the power of voting on notes. This decision was awaited for a long time. Modi government is giving special rights and exemptions to ‘donors’ while doing injustice after injustice to ‘annadatas’.

He also expressed hope that the Supreme Court will also take note of the fact that the Election Commission is continuously refusing to meet political parties on the issue of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). If everything is transparent and clear in the voting process then why the insistence on not giving time.
