India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime Scrapped by Home Minister Amit Shah for National Security

Delhi, 8 February (H.S): union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Thursday that the Centre has decided to scrap the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR) in order to maintain the country’s internal security and demographic structure of the northeastern states.

The Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of scrapping it, and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has recommended its immediate suspension. The FMR, which allowed people residing near the border to enter each other’s territory without documents, was implemented in 2018 as part of India’s Act East policy. However, with concerns about illegal activities and infiltration, the decision has been made to fence the entire 1,643-km-long border and pave a patrol track for better surveillance.

Two pilot projects for fencing through a hybrid surveillance system are already underway, and additional fence works have been approved for Manipur. This decision by the Indian government reinforces their commitment to securing their borders and protecting their citizens.
