Delhi, 16 February (H.S): The Congress party’s main bank accounts have been frozen by the Income Tax department, as claimed by party treasurer Ajay Maken on Friday. This has severely impacted the party’s political activities, especially since general elections are just two weeks away. Maken stated that even funds received through their crowdfunding scheme cannot be used due to the freezing of accounts.
He alleged that democracy is in danger in the country, as for the first time in history, the principal opposition party’s accounts have been frozen on flimsy grounds. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned this action and stated that it is a deep assault on India’s democracy.
He further added that while the BJP can continue using their collected funds for elections, the Congress party’s funds have been sealed. Both Maken and Kharge called on the judiciary to protect India’s democracy and save the multi-party system in the country. They also announced their plans to take to the streets and fight against this autocratic action.
