New Delhi, December 4 (HS): Heavy rains have started as Cyclone Michong hits the coasts of Tamil Nadu. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in Tamil Nadu for today.

On Tuesday, this storm will become more violent and will hit Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. There is a possibility of wind blowing at a speed of 110 kilometres per hour. According to the department, life has become disrupted due to heavy rains in many coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai.

According to the Meteorological Department, Cyclonic Storm Michong was centred over West Central and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh, the South West Bay of Bengal, and the adjoining North Tamil Nadu coasts at 5:30 a.m. on Monday. It is likely to move north-northwestward, intensify, and cross near Bapatla between Nellore and Machilipatnam by tomorrow afternoon. Due to this cyclone, there is a danger of heavy rains and strong winds in many states, including Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, due to heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, many trains have been cancelled, and Section 144 has been imposed in coastal areas. Schools have also been kept closed in the worst-affected districts. It has been raining heavily in Chennai since this morning.
