On February 27th in Budapest, the Hungarian Parliament endorsed Sweden’s application for NATO membership, concluding a period of uncertainty that lasted a year and a half. This strategic move by Sweden, seeking to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a direct response to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The Hungarian legislative body passed the resolution with an overwhelming majority of 188 votes in favor, compared to a mere six dissenting votes. This affirmative action from Hungary marks a significant moment for NATO, facilitating its second enlargement since Sweden and Finland submitted their applications in May 2022. Admission of new members into NATO necessitates a unanimous agreement from all existing members. Hungary’s approval was notably the final endorsement needed, following Turkey’s ratification of the membership last month.
