Deadly Landslide in Papua New Guinea Claims Over 100 Lives

Port Moresby, 24 May (HS): More than 100 people were killed in a landslide in a remote part of Papua New Guinea on Friday.

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the disaster occurred in Kaokalam village in Enga Province, situated about 600 Km northwest of Papua’s capital Port Moresby. The landslide occurred around 3 am on Friday (local time). The local residents said that the death toll may be more than 100. The authorities, however, have not confirmed the number. Local people are pulling bodies from the debris. At least six villages were affected by the landslide. Rescue teams from across the South Pacific Island nation have been deployed.
