New Delhi, 9 June (HS): HD Kumaraswamy, the former Karnataka Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader, is expected to take oath as a minister in the union Cabinet on Sunday evening, according to party sources. While the portfolio allocation has yet to be finalized, sources say the JD(S), which gained two seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections, has indicated interest in the Agriculture Ministry.

Kumaraswamy has got an invitation to the swearing-in event. He will be sworn in as a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new Council of Ministers, a party source confirmed. To commemorate the event, preparations are ongoing at JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda’s house on 5 Safdarjung Lane in New Delhi. This evening, Modi will be sworn in for a record-equalling third term as Prime Minister. Kumaraswamy’s appointment to the union Cabinet is viewed as a deliberate move by the BJP to enhance its footing in southern states, particularly Karnataka, where the JD(S) has strong support, particularly in Vokkaliga-dominated districts.
