Delhi, 3 June (H.S): On the day before counting day, the Election Commission of India reacted to the various memes circulating on social media regarding the lack of action against poll violators. One particular meme that caught their attention was netizens calling them Laapata Gentlemen, inspired by a recent movie title. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar addressed this issue in a press conference, stating that the Commission had never gone missing and had chosen to communicate through press notes, with 100 being issued during polling.

The CEC also mentioned that the 18th Lok Sabha elections had set a world record with 64.2 crore voters, including 31.2 crore women voters. Over 68,000 monitoring teams and 1.5 crore polling and security personnel were involved in the election process, making it robust. Only 39 repolls took place as compared to 540 in 2019 and Jammu and Kashmir recorded its highest voter turnout in four years.

The CEC also highlighted the seizures made during the election, including Rs 10,000 crore in cash, freebies, drugs, and liquor. He also mentioned the use of nearly four lakh vehicles, 135 special trains, and 1,692 air sorties in conducting the polls. The Commission reported that over 90% of complaints regarding Model Code of Conduct were resolved and FIRs were filed against top leaders and polling officials involved in malpractice. On the issue of deep fakes and AI-generated content, the CEC stated that the Commission had largely controlled this menace during the general elections.
