Srinagar, 20 June (HS): Two terrorists were killed and two security personnel injured in an intense encounter in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, officials reported. Security forces initiated a cordon-and-search operation in the Watergam area of Baramulla early Wednesday morning after receiving intelligence about the presence of terrorists. The search operation escalated into a gunfight when the terrorists opened fire on the security personnel, officials said.

According to Brigadier Deepak Dev, Commander of the 5 Sector Rashtriya Rifles, the slain terrorists have been identified as Usman and Umar, both of Pakistani origin and associated with the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Usman had reportedly been active in the Kashmir Valley since 2020. The encounter, which occurred in Hadipura village of Rafiabad area, was a joint operation conducted by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP), and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Acting on specific intelligence provided by JKP, the forces swiftly cordoned off the area and safely evacuated civilians from nearby houses before engaging the terrorists. During the ensuing firefight, both terrorists were neutralized, and significant quantities of weapons and ammunition were recovered from the site, Brigadier Dev said.

The operation marks a significant success for the security forces, with Brigadier Dev emphasizing the high operational tempo maintained over the past few months and the substantial cooperation from the local Kashmiri population. Security forces continue to make sustained efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.
