Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of the Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor on Wednesday, marking the debut of India’s inaugural underwater metro service.
This innovative addition to Kolkata’s transport system highlights remarkable engineering achievements, including India’s deepest metro station, the Howrah Metro station, situated beneath the River Hooghly. This pioneering tunnel represents the first time a major river in India has been crossed by a transportation tunnel. In April 2023, the Kolkata Metro achieved a critical milestone as its trains completed a trial run through the tunnel located 32 meters below the water’s surface, demonstrating the city’s progress in transport technology.
With Prime Minister Modi’s inauguration, Kolkata steps into a new chapter, showcasing an example for other Indian cities to follow in adopting innovative and environmentally friendly transport methods.
