Kolkata, 29 February (HS): After a standoff of 55 days, the West Bengal Police arrested the main accused of Sandeshkhali case and Trinamool leader Sheikh Shahjahan from Minakhan area on Wednesday night.
South Bengal ADGP Supratim Sarkar said, ”The complaints in were not related to Section 354 Crpc. Many complaints were lodged after Feb 7, 8 and 9. All the cases reported after Feb 8 and 9 are related to incidents that happened two or three year ago. It takes time to investigate them, collect evidence, examine the evidence, especially in the case of cases that happened two year ago.”
Notably, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday commented that the leader against whom 42 FIRs are registered has not been arrested till date.The Police cannot escape from their responsibility. After that, Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh assured that Shahjahan would be arrested within a week.
Earlier, on January 5, the ED team which had gone to raid in Sandeshkhali was attacked by thousands of people enabling Shahjahan to escape. After that incident, the women of Sandeshkhali were continuously on protest claiming Sheikh Shahjahan and his men had physically exploited them for years and forcibly took their lands. West Bengal Governor Dr. CV Anand Bose, Central Women”s Commission, Human Rights Commission, Scheduled Tribe Commission and members of the fact finding team from Delhi reached Sandeshkhali. Then layer after layer more revelations were made and Sandeshkhali came to the limelight. West Bengal Police was continuously being criticised for not arresting Sheikh Shahjahan.
On Thursday, Calcutta High Court has made harsh and strict remarks regarding Shahjahan. The court made it clear that Shahjahan is not going to get any relief at the moment. The court said that there are 42 cases against Shahjahan. Therefore, the decision on bail will be taken only after the hearing.
