New Delhi, February 22 – In a sharp rebuke on Thursday, the Congress party accused the BJP-led government of undermining democracy by instructing the microblogging site X to block user accounts and content associated with the farmers’ protests. The platform, disagreeing with the government’s directive, advocated for preserving freedom of speech for the posts in question.
The directive to block 177 accounts, claimed to be linked to the protest movements, came from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, following a request by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Highlighting the issue, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared a press release from X’s Global Government Affairs team, condemning the government’s orders as a severe blow to democratic values in India. X countered by emphasizing its commitment to transparency and informed affected users of the government’s measures as per its standard policy.
The farmers’ protests, which seek measures like a guaranteed minimum support price for crops and waivers on agricultural loans, saw a temporary pause in their march towards Delhi due to the tragic death of one protester and injuries sustained by 12 police officers.
