Sandeshkhali, 20 February (HS): A TV journalist was arrested in Sandeshkhali of North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal while doing live ground reporting from Sandeshkhali on Monday evening.
The journalist was arrested when he was live on a TV channel. At the time of arrest the journalist said, ”The police have arrested me for raising the voice of Sandeshkhali victims. This is the condition of democracy in West Bengal where media persons are being arrested during live reporting.”
According to police sources, the TV journalist was arrested in connection with a case of trespassing and molestation filed against him by a woman.
Union I&B minister Anurag Singh Thakur condemned the arrest as an attack on media freedom, saying it was unfortunate that a journalist reporting on atrocities on women had been targeted in a state with a woman CM. Thakur, who was in Guwahati, said coercive action against journalists in Bengal wasn”t a new trend. The arrested of a journalist during live reporting has become a matter of great concern for the journalists working in diffrent parts of West Bengal.
Press Club of Kolkata has condemned the the arrested of the TV journalist. ”Electronic media journalist Santu Pan was arrested by the police on Monday evening in Sandeshkhali. Press Club, Kolkata is concerned about this incident and demanding his release. If there is any specific allegation against him, it is subject to investigation. But the Press Club, Kolkata is protesting the arrest of the journalist while on duty,” said Press Club, Kolkata in a press release on Monday night.
