Bengaluru, 29 January (HS): Niranjan Mukundan has created a new history by becoming the first Indian Paralympian sportsperson to join the 100 medal club by winning 100 international medals representing the country. By doing so he also holds the unique distinction of becoming the first and only Indian Para Swimmer to harvest 100 medals at the international level tournaments.
Presently in Reykjavik, Iceland: Niranjan Mukundan is presently taking part in the Reykjavik International Games 2024. The sports meet is also termed as Iceland Championships. It is a multi-sporting annual international competition wherein 12 countries participate in a variety of events.
Both won multiple medals: In the swimming category, the two swimmers Niranjan Mukundan and Shams Alam took part. While Niranjan Mukundan snatched five medals including three Gold and two Silver so did Shams Alam, who scored six medals inclusive of one Gold, two Silver and three Bronze.
Five medals in five events: Niranjan Mukundan won five medals in the following events:
1. 400m freestyle gold
2. 200m freestyle gold
3. 200m breaststroke gold (national record time)
4. 100m freestyle silver
5. 50m butterfly silver
A new milestone in Indian sports history: With the accomplishments in the Reykjavik International Games 2024 Niranjan Mukundan has thus created a new milestone in the field of Indian sports history. This hitherto unheard record has also enabled him to enter the 100 international medal club winning 100 medals representing India.
Most number of Asian records: Niranjan Mukundan is a Paralympian who has represented India at the Tokyo Paralympic Games. Apart from being the former Junior World Champion, the title of holding the most number of Asian records by an Indian Para swimmer continues to remain on his name. Among the total seven Asian records include two long courses and five short courses.
Currently undergoing training: He is currently undergoing training and preparing to qualify for the Paralympic Games 2024 scheduled to be held in France, later this year.
