Blue-collar work, once predominantly associated with manual labour, has undergone a remarkable transformation in response to ongoing technological advancements that are reshaping the employment landscape. WorkIndia, the largest technology platform in India for blue-collar recruitment, recently surveyed major metropolitan cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai. The purpose of the survey was to analyze and provide valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of blue-collar jobs.
One of the notable findings from the survey highlights the changing nature of work tasks performed by blue-collar workers. It reveals that a significant 41% of these workers are now involved in technical tasks, indicating a growing demand for skilled labour in industries embracing automation and digitalization. This shift emphasizes the importance for blue-collar workers to acquire new skills and adapt to changing job requirements.
Moreover, the survey also shed light on a significant change in the working hours for blue-collar workers. Contrary to common belief, the findings revealed that a considerable 81% of the blue-collar workforce now have fixed working hours, while only a mere 19% lack such regularity. Additionally, it was observed that 20% of workers are flexible and adaptable to both fixed and changing work hours, enabling them to engage in multiple jobs throughout the day.
Additionally, the survey investigates the impact of employment on the overall well-being of individuals in blue-collar occupations. It uncovers that a significant portion, specifically 30%, of manual workers feel fatigued by the conclusion of their workday, underscoring the physically demanding nature of their jobs. Surprisingly, a comparable percentage of technical workers, around 21%, also experience a similar level of exhaustion, suggesting that tasks in the technical realm can pose mental and physical challenges as well. Among those who perform a combination of technical and manual tasks, 25% report feeling drained at the end of the day. Furthermore, the survey reveals that 17% of workers, regardless of their specific occupation, reported negative effects on their health resulting from their job.
The survey also sheds light on the aspect of mental exhaustion, which emerges as another noteworthy concern. It indicates that 20% of blue-collar workers encounter mental fatigue by the end of their workday. Notably, 18% of workers attribute their mental exhaustion to fluctuating work hours, emphasizing the significance of consistent and predictable schedules in promoting employee well-being.
“The results of the survey reveal that the ongoing situation is a cause for concern amongst the blue-collar workforce. The survey also observed that 20% of workers are mentally exhausted by the end of their day. This affects their output over a period of time and keeps them from maintaining their own well-being. Companies hiring these workers should assign appropriate working hours that will not hinder their mental and physical health and in turn help to perform their jobs more effectively.”
