Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation Under Scrutiny: MPCB's Legal Battle Unveiled

MPCB Acts Against MBMC for Fires at Uttan Dumping Ground

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has taken decisive action against the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) in response to repeated fire incidents at the Uttan Dumping Ground, which have resulted in significant air pollution in the vicinity. This action follows a notice issued by Adv. Godfrey W. Pimenta, Trustee of the Watchdog Foundation.

In a notice dated April 4, 2024, Pimenta drew attention to the persistent outbreaks of fires at the dumping ground, urging the MPCB to address the environmental and public health risks. In response, the MPCB has initiated Regular Criminal Cases against MBMC and other accountable parties for violating the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. These cases have been filed before the Hon’ble Chief Judicial Magistrate in Thane.

MPCB’s Ongoing Efforts Towards Compliance and Accountability

Furthermore, the MPCB has documented its ongoing efforts to ensure compliance. It has issued numerous directives to MBMC to adhere to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. Most recently, on May 17, 2024, the MPCB issued specific instructions to MBMC regarding the fire incident on March 30, 2024, mandating compliance with authorization conditions and all relevant provisions. Sujit Dholam, Regional Officer (HQ) at MPCB, communicated these measures in an official letter addressed to Adv.
